And you're done!Īs always, messing with Kindle files can sometimes end badly please be aware of that before trying any of the above. Delete the old book cover (it will ask if you're sure-click "yes") and copy the new jpg in. Save whatever jpg you want to use as the new book cover somewhere on your computer, and rename it to match. Right click and open the file location you should find this is the only image inside a hidden folder called "bookcovers." Copy the name of that jpg. Among the search results, you should see a large (or, if your original cover image wasn't large, a not-large) jpg with the same name as that string of numbers and letters, eg "c728b9d1-e81e-4524-a03a-2da6f98c9f94_EBOK" (note that you do not want the jpgs whose names start with "thumbnail"). Copy a chunk of the seemingly random numbers and letters, eg "c728", and search for that within all the files on the Kindle. Calibre supports organizing existing e-books into virtual libraries, displaying.

The sdr file will be named something like "Book_Title_c728b9d1-e81e-4524-a03a-2da6f98c9f94.sdr". Calibre is a cross-platform free and open-source suite of e-book software.
Calibre kindle sync update#
First, on your computer and with your Kindle plugged in, open up the Kindle files and go to "documents," then find the sdr file for the ebook you're trying to update (it will probably be in a folder named after the author). To turn on syncing, go to Settings > Device Options > Personalize Your Kindl. The newest Paperwhite also has a feature to display the cover of what you're currently reading on the lockscreen updating this cover image is a little bit trickier. If it is turned off, your books will not sync automatically. Updating the book cover in the library and file is super easy: after updating the cover and re-converting the book in Calibre, simply plug your Kindle in, do not remove the book from your device, and hit "send to device." This will not delete highlights, notes, your reading progress, etc.-it just overwrites the cover. It can use as a source: a json file in native format (such as generated by Librarian when syncing, see below) the json file automatically generated by the Calibre Kindle Collections. It apparently works on the Voyage as well.

(I use Calibre for public domain books, but you can also use it for ebooks purchased from places other than Amazon-I assume this method will still work regardless of the file source.) It has been tested on a Kindle PW2 (EU, Wi-Fi) FW 5.4.5.1, and on a Touch FW 5.3.
Calibre kindle sync how to#
I thought I'd share in case someone else has been trying to figure out how to do this.

If Auto-Connect option is enabled, your device will. When I used a kindle i had it set up to immediately convert everything to a non. Hi everyone! I was gifted the newest Kindle Paperwhite 5, 11th Generation released 2021 (love it!) and finally figured out how to update/change book covers for books that have already been side-loaded via Calibre. This app seamlessly connects to your Calibre Library and shows up as a connected device on Calibre. Personally Calibre did amazing work for me always, even if the UI was clunky.
